April 2019 was the first trip for Newbridge College to the Mustard Seed Communities in Jamaica made up of 13 Ty students, 3 parents and 2 teachers . It is a complete immersion program and involves staying and worked in a care home - Sopies Place for abandoned children with disabilities, outside Kingston, Jamaica. The Children for Children Volunteer program is designed to open the thinking of children from first world economies to the every day realities of life for children far less fortunate.
It was an incredible experience for all those involved. Every day was a visit to a different care home on the island, meeting lots of children and adults with varying physical and mental disabilities, and participating in works projects. The students participate in light construction, landscaping, painting, and entertaining the children. For many Irish children this is a life changing experience. Their visit also hugely impacts on the children that are there and the funding provided improves their quality of life. Mustard Seed has been in operation for over 40 Years and has volunteer groups travelling down to them all year
A group of 20 TYs are embarking on their trip which will be in May 2020 and have had the added benefit of speaking with last years group. Lots of fund raising will keep them occupied and there are plans to run another fashion show which was a great success last year.
