Sports Roundup 22nd September

RUGBY

Girls Rugby Blitz at The High School

The Senior girls topped their group and won the top of table game vs The high school  29-0

Ellers Blitz at Blackrock College RFC

The Ellers had their 3rd match on Wednesday the 20th of September in Blackrock RFC. On the day the matches were run under a blitz format we produced 4 Eller teams on the day.  The games were against Wesley College  & CBC Monkstown. The Games were high tempo & free flowing. Our teams showed an ability to play with ball in hand and an offloading skillset which proved difficult to defend against. Results on the day:
Ellers A 50 Wesley 20        Ellers A 60 CBC 5
Ellers B 35  Wesley 15    Ellers B40 CBC 5
Ellers C Black 15 Wesley 20    Ellers C Black 20 CBC 5
Ellers C white 25 Wesley 45    Ellers C white  10 CBC 15

Ellers B v CBC Monkstwon

The Eller B’s took on Wesley and CBC Monkstown in a blitz on Wednesday. They had convincing wins in both games, beating CBC 40 - 5 and Wesley 35 - 15. Standout players on the day were Charles Kay and Dillon Carey.

Inters v Clongowes

The Inter As had a superb performance away to Clongowes. The home team started off very strong but with some outstanding defensive displays from Sean Lynch, Fiacha Duffy and Josh Dalton the home team couldn't capitalise. Harry Traynor pulled off a smart lineout to himself and scored in the corner and that set newbridge on their way.  Newbridge found their shape and played some really good rugby with the half backs Daniel Liston at 9 and Jack Scott 10 pulling the strings. The boys scored some great tries from counter attack and set piece with Lucas Flynn heavily involved. Other standouts out on the day included Donal Larkin and Matt Spollen.

The Inter Cs produced one of the greatest comebacks of all time against a much physically stronger Clongowes last Wednesday. The home side were quick to start, running in two tries in the opening five mins. However Newbridge settled and organised themselves to make it a much more competitive contest. Clongowes ran in two further converted tries before the last play of the half resulted in a further try. The half time score was 29-0 in favour of the home side. Newbridge did not let the score dampen their spirits. Early tries from Noah Farrell and Senan Quinn ensured Newbridge made it a competitive contest again at 29-14. Newbridge began to rally with some excellent passing plays which saw Eavan Taylor score two tries. 29-24. The last play of the game allowed Newbridge to commit men forward. An excellent dummy run allowed Senan Quinn to find space and score in the corner to level proceedings. Unfortunately, the resulting kick fell agonisingly short, however Newbridge took comfort in an incredible team display. Excellent displays from Senan Quinn, Eavan Taylor, Charlie Cunningham, Hugh Murphy and Oscar Slattery. Well done to all involved.

Result: Inter Bs 37:32 Clongowes

Junior Rugby v St Michaels

Our Juniors were on the road for the first time this season as they travelled to Dublin to play St Michaels. We missed a penalty early on after some dominance but Michael’s scored a fine to take the lead. Missed tackles cost us another try and with our heads down, Michaels stuck again to lead 21:0 at half time. In the second half, we took control of the ball and did everything but score, held up short, tackled into touch, maul stopped… we were by far the better team but got no rewards for it. Michaels scored 2 late tries to win 35:0. Best on the day were JP Brophy and Tadhg Murphy.

Result: Junior B 7  St Michaels 54

Senior 1st v Blackrock College

The Senior 1st squad headed to Blackrock for their second game of the season.  A good start by the College saw both sides go toe to toe in some entertaining rugby for the first 10 minutes of the game. Unfortunately, some fits and starts aside, that is as good as it would get for the College.
Three tries in each half with the latter four converted saw the Dublin 4 outfit control the scoreboard. The Southsiders ran out 38-0 on a disappointing day for the College. Next up is the opening game of the League as the Seniors head to Bray to take on St. Gerard’s School.

Result: Senior 2nd   73    5       St. Michael’s
