RUGBY

Senior Seconds League v Blackrock

The Senior 2nds gave up home advantage in their latest League group match to avoid a weather cancelation. They travelled to south Dublin to take on Blackrock College.

The College settled the better and a try off of a lineout from Tadhg Kelly was soon followed by Daniel Connolly crashing over from a ruck. The Dubliners made the most of a couple of penalties to push deep into the College 22 and crossed for 7. Eanna Sherlock showed some good timing and ran a good support line to collect the ball and cross for a try. Two conversions from Billy Cross had the College 19-7 up. With a minute left in the half the southsiders narrowed the gap with a converted try to leave it 19-14 at the break.

The hosts kept their side of the scoreboard ticking with an early second half penalty. But Jonathan Fardy was on hand to bag a try soon after to put the College ahead by 9. Blackrock hit back once again with an unconverted try to bring it back to a difference of 4. This, however, would be as close at they would get. Each attack they had was well defended and the College were rewarded for their solid defending when some silky attacking play say Paddy Waters touch down after catching a pin-point crossfield kick from Cross. Rory Taylor acted quickest to cross soon after In the left corner. Three quality conversions from Cross pushed the College to 40. The home side had time for one last push for a score but a dropped ball handed the ball back to the College and Sherlock would round off a solid team effort and leave the score 45-22 to the College in the end.  Special mention goes to Paddy Forde, Eanna Sherlock, Daniel Connolly, Conor Flynn and Jody Flanagan.

Junior Friendly v St Munchins

Our Juniors travelled to Limerick to take on St Munchins in another Cup warm up game on a bitterly cold day. Munchins started by far the better team and seemed to be more hungry in every facet of the game, winning turnovers, gainlines and metres at will. It was no surprise when Munchins scored twice. We recovered with a great first phase strike from James McCarney but then faltered to another score to see Munchins 17:5 up at the break.  After some home truths during the break, we looked a different team in the second half, full of urgency, work and commitment and it certainly made a difference. Luke Kelly helped himself to four tries, two of which were individual effects from the deep to cap an amazing half of rugby for him. Tadhg Murphy also finished off a great team try while Tom Martin finished off the scoring. And while we also conceded two soft enough tries, we had done enough to seal a fine 35:27 victory.
